Why review your school or kura physical activity culture?

Why review聽approaches to聽whole school physical activity?聽

Whole school approaches to physical activity include active events, active play, activities students do at breaktimes, school or kura sport, and incidental activity students do during class time. Whole school approaches to physical activity can be designed to maximise their potential to engage students and provide wellbeing and learning benefits. Reviewing whole school approaches to physical activity could help you consider:聽

  • How can events like聽cross-country聽and athletics be organised to maximise participation and support wider聽school or聽kura聽learning聽and聽wellbeing聽goals?聽聽聽
  • Are there more ways we can include physical activity in learning聽areas such as English, maths, or science?聽
  • How聽can聽we聽create opportunities for play during the school聽or聽kura聽day that assist with students鈥櫬爃olistic聽development?聽聽聽

Quality support, opportunities and experiences are vital to achieving quality physical activity experiences for young people. The following indicators can be used as a starting point to review your whole school approach to physical activity.

Why review approaches to PE?聽聽

Health and聽Physical聽Education聽is a key learning area聽for building a聽focus聽on wellbeing and fostering critical thinking聽about health and wellbeing. A聽sense of wellbeing聽at school聽is聽a聽vital聽foundation for learning.聽The importance of fostering students鈥 wellbeing is clearly stated in the vision of聽The New Zealand Curriculum聽(NZC).聽聽

Play.sport聽data聽(Boyd et al., 2020)聽shows聽that聽Health and聽PE聽learning can be a vehicle for schools to action wider goals relating to student wellbeing, inclusion, and culturally responsive practice. Reviewing聽approaches聽to PE聽to ensure they align with the principles of quality practice聽provides an opportunity to maximise the wellbeing and learning benefits students can gain from the Health and PE learning area. It is also a聽chance to integrate PE with health and with other learning areas, as well as school-wide themes聽or values,聽approaches to聽the key competencies, or wider school聽goals.聽聽聽

Quality PE is聽holistic聽and聽student-centred聽and based on聽The NZ Curriculum. It reflects the needs of students and community and promotes local connections and聽physical literacy.聽聽

Quality PE:

  • is based around the聽four strands聽and underlying concepts聽of the Health and PE learning area,聽and the key competencies聽in聽The NZ Curriculum聽
  • is聽emergent聽and school-directed聽and聽relates to schools鈥 and students鈥 contexts and needs聽
  • take a聽locally led聽approach that is about knowing your community, working in partnership, making use of local resources and strengths, learning as you go, and empowering local leadership聽聽聽聽
  • is聽formative, developmental, and inclusive聽(e.g., provides聽sequenced learning that draws on students鈥 prior experiences and fit students鈥 different needs, backgrounds, and interests)聽
  • offers聽encouragement and support聽for students to try a range of new experiences聽聽聽
  • uses聽effective聽and culturally responsive聽teaching approaches to develop students鈥 physical literacy聽in ways that聽reflect聽The NZ Curriculum聽and promote聽hauora, wellbeing, and holistic development.聽聽
