Balance is Better: Lisa Carrington, Canoeist
鈥淭here are no secrets to success, It is the result of preparation, hard work and learning from failure.鈥 - Colin Powell.
Once upon a time, Lisa Carrington wasn't an Olympic and World Champion. She was just a Kiwi kid, growing up in the Bay of Plenty: into netball in听winter鈥攎um听coached the听迟别补尘鈥攁苍诲听surf-lifesaving in summer. She was pretty good at sport, but not doing as well as she thought she should. 鈥淚 wanted to be a Silver Fern,鈥 says Lisa. 鈥淚f you play sport, you want to be the best.鈥 Most people wouldn鈥檛 describe Lisa鈥檚 achievements in netball and surf-lifesaving as '鈥榝补颈濒耻谤别蝉鈥欌赌攕丑别听was good at netball and she won national surf life-saving听尘别诲补濒蝉鈥攂耻迟听her sporting career wasn鈥檛 quite matching her dreams: she wasn鈥檛 going to be a Silver Fern. Except for鈥 that鈥檚 just the 鈥榣earning from failure鈥 part. It glosses over the other part, the bit about 鈥榩reparation and hard work鈥. Again, Lisa鈥檚 parents were integral to the story. 鈥淢um and Dad could see I was good at sport and they'd keep encouraging me. They weren't pushing me鈥攖hey didn't tell me I had to win鈥攂ut听they did challenge me. I was quite a shy kid and they could see that if I wanted to succeed I needed to get out of my comfort zone. What they taught me was the importance of discipline: of turning up to training every day. What mattered to them was integrity, showing your appreciation for the people who help you, being aware of a situation and being realistic.鈥

鈥淪port, for them, was a way I could learn some values for life, really.鈥
