Sport and M膩ori Wellbeing听
鈥渁 secure identity is a necessary prerequisite for good health and wellbeing, and cultural identity depends not only on access to culture and heritage but also on the opportunity for cultural expression鈥︹ T膩 Mason Durie听
M膩ori have had a strong relationship with sport even in pre-colonial times. The Hillary Commission鈥檚 M膩ori Taskforce on Sport, Fitness and Leisure in 1998 noted that 鈥渟port, fitness and leisure are activities that M膩ori have always considered a taonga鈥 and are thereby protected under the Te Tiriti o Waitangi. In general, M膩ori sport can be characterised by:听
- The acceptance of m膩tauranga M膩ori (M膩ori knowledge);听
- The application of te reo me ona tikanga (M膩ori language and practices);听
- Upholding M膩ori values such as whanaungatanga (kinship ties, relationships), manaakitanga (respect, reverence) and aroha (compassion); and听
- Reflections of whakapapa (genealogy) through acknowledging tribal membership.听
The connection to whakapapa through recognizing tribal membership is also a strong characteristic of M膩ori sport, especially within national M膩ori sporting events and tournaments. Strengthening M膩ori identity is integral to M膩ori health and wellbeing. Together these characteristics foster an environment that supports mauri ora 鈥 healthy individuals, wh膩nau ora 鈥 healthy families, and wai ora 鈥 healthy environments.听听
Sport can play a large role in the health and wellbeing of M膩ori adults and young people. Beyond the obvious physical benefits, it provides an important platform for M膩ori to access their culture and heritage and to participate and succeed as M膩ori.听
