He Oranga Poutama expanded into Manawatū

11 April 2023

He Oranga Poutama, a long-standing physical activity programme by M膩ori, for M膩ori, as M膩ori has been expanded to the Manawat奴, broadening its national reach to more M膩ori communities across Aotearoa.鈥

The programme is one of the longest 爆料社区 Ihi Aotearoa initiatives with an investment history spanning 30 years.鈥

Following the increase in funding for He Oranga Poutama in 2022 from $1.78 million to $3.38 million, a new partnership between Te Pae Oranga o Ruahine o Tararua and Sport Manawat奴 will see the programme delivered in the Manawat奴.

The increased investment has also seen He Oranga Poutama rolled out to the South Island through Te P奴tahitanga o Te Waipounamu, extended to the Urewera ranges and Tauranga Moana through existing provider M膩taatua Sports Trust.

He Oranga Poutama has also expanded to the greater Wellington takiw膩 (region) through Nuku Ora partnering with Te R奴nanganui o Te 膧tiawa ki te 弄poko o te Ika and Te R奴nanga o Toa Rangatira Incorporated and reaching into Te Tair膩whiti (north of Gisborne) through Sport Gisborne Tair膩whiti partnering with Te R奴nanganui o Ng膩ti Porou.鈥

鈥淗e Oranga Poutama has been the longest standing Kaupapa M膩ori initiative at 爆料社区 Ihi Aotearoa,鈥 said 爆料社区 Ihi Aotearoa CEO Raelene Castle.

鈥淭he expansion to 13 providers will broaden the programme鈥檚 reach into M膩ori communities across Aotearoa and forms part of a $7 million Kaupapa M膩ori Response Plan focused on improving M膩ori participation and growing leadership through active recreation, sport and play.鈥

鈥淲e are looking forward to partnering with Sport Manawat奴 and our h膩pori to promote traditional physical activities that build whanaungatanga, hauora-a-tinana and a pathway to wh膩nau wellbeing,鈥 said Te Pae Oranga o Ruahine o Tararua Chair Oriana Paewai.

Sport Manawat奴 Board member and Te Pae Oranga o Ruahine o Tararua iwi representative Dr Jeremy Hapeta (Ng膩ti Raukawa) shares 鈥榯he response signals the mana enhancing way that our organisations have partnered and navigated the journey to re-establish He Oranga Poutama across in our rohe鈥.

鈥淎s the 鈥楾e Pae Oranga o Ruahine o Tararua鈥 appointed representative on Sport Manawat奴鈥檚 Board, it is pleasing to finally see this partnership come to fruition,鈥 said Dr Hapeta.

鈥淲e have worked with Iwi representatives in our rohe and h膩pori on establishing this partnership for the past 12 months, since May 2022.

鈥淭he process has involved hui and k艒rerorero as well as engaging (a-k膩nohi) with the He Oranga Poutama lead at Ihi Aotearoa 鈥 爆料社区. Collectively, the decision was made to re-engage with HOP in our rohe to secure funding so that rangatahi can realise our Pae Ora vision.鈥

鈥淎 key to rangatahi realising healthy futures and flourishing wellbeing is to empower them to determine and design their own solutions. So, we hope that a return of this HOP funding will provide the resource that will enable rangatahi to design fit-for-purpose programmes.

鈥淭hey know what opportunities work best for them to participate and the places and spaces that are meaningful to activate participation,鈥 said Dr Hapeta.
