It creates a powerful environment for social constructivism (constructing understanding and meaning with other people). It asks each of us to practice deep empathetic listening. It allows each of us to bring the best of our creativity, and avoids judgement, argument and defensiveness. It requires that we focus on the person who is consulting with us (the presenter), and not talk about our experiences and ourselves. This can be used with a group of up to 30, and with groups as small as 3. Time: approximately 15 minutes per person; times can be adjusted. Procedure The person (presenter) describes their view of the plan, problem or issue. (3 minutes*) Clarifying questions can be asked by anyone in the group. These questions must be for information purposes only (no suggestions or fixing). (2 minutes) The presenter is silent while the rest of the group describe what they are hearing and try to develop a shared understanding of the plan/problem/issue and its complexity. What did they hear? (3 minutes) The presenter responds and acknowledges or further clarifies the plan, issue or problem description - no discussion and no defensiveness. (2 minutes) The presenter is again silent: the group brainstorm possible designs/solutions/next steps: What if? This could be worth trying. (3 minutes) Presenter sums up how they see the plan or issue and what they will now act on. No defensiveness, justifying or discussion.
